Canon prepping the 7D Mark II

According to rumor site CanonWatch.com, a revamp of the popular 7D is forthcoming. Here's a list of specs and a possible release date.

It's been a little over four years since Canon released what would become their flagship APS-C camera, the 7D. It should be surprise no one that the tech giant would eventually release a revamped 7D and outfit it with features and tech found in recent cameras, such as the 5D Mark III.

Thanks goes to CanonWatch.com for breaking this story. According to the popular rumor site, the camera is being slated for a March, 2014 release. While many of the specs are below, Canon is in the process of testing two different sensors for the crop cam, a 20 and a 24 megapixel. We seriously doubt that there will be two new 7Ds, so we're looking at an either/or proposition.

Without further adieu, here's the spec list, as it stands at this very early date:

  • 20MP or 24MP sensor with Dual Pixel CMOS AF
  • 61-point autofocus system similar to the 5D Mark III
  • High frame rate recording
  • High grade weather sealing
  • Dual Digic V+ processor
  • Single card slot
  • WiFi & GPS
  • More innovative features for video
  • Improved ISO performance
  • Retail around $2000

It will be interesting to see just what exactly those 'innovative features' are for video shooters. Currently, the Canon 70D is the best available APS-C model from the camera maker. In order to position the 7D Mark II at a higher price point than the 70D, Canon will have to add a lot of value to the 7D Mark II. RedShark will relay more details as they become available.
