Nikon has confirmed firmware 2.00 for the ZR, adding H.265 Log3G10 recording, with open gate and anamorphic desqueeze support planned for 2027. Nine NIKKOR Z CINEMA T1.9 VV lenses are also in development.
Nikon has finally officially confirmed that it is developing firmware version 2.00 for the Nikon ZR, with v2.00 firmware landing before the end of the year after the camera’s release in October 2025.
The update adds support for Log3G10 and REDWideGamutRGB when recording in H.265, a combination previously available only in RAW. Nikon says this delivers smaller file sizes while retaining high color-grading latitude.
Perhaps of more interest to many is the roadmap that follows: Nikon says it is also developing further firmware for open gate recording and a desqueeze display for anamorphic lenses, targeting a 2027 release on the ZR.
Separately, subsidiary RED is updating its RED CONTROL and RED CONTROL PRO apps to add remote control support for the ZR.
There are new lenses coming too, but we don’t know quite when. Nikon says it is “developing” the NIKKOR Z CINEMA T1.9 VV series, a line of nine new cinema lenses, which will start with the NIKKOR Z CINEMA 50mm T1.9 VV.
The series will have an image circle large enough to cover Nikon's full-frame sensors as well as the VV format and 40.96 mm × 21.60 mm image sensor of RED's V-RAPTOR [X], a first for NIKKOR lenses. The lenses will also include an autofocus mechanism alongside manual focus control.
This is a long tease. The video above was released in April, and the company was talking about the potential to create them as far back as 2024. So, while we might reasonably expect the 50mm T1.9 VV to be available around NAB next year, the next eight may lag a ways behind.
