Honor's Robot Phone has launched in China with a 4-DoF gimbal camera and the first ARRI color science pipeline built into a smartphone. Here's what's inside, and what it costs.
To be totally honest, we were rather skeptical of the Honor Robot Phone when it was first announced. But, following a rollout path that has taken in everything from MWC 2026, Cannes, and the 28th Shanghai International Film Festival, it launched yesterday in China. And above and beyond what we still can’t help thinking of as a bit of a gimmick in the shape of its 4-DoF integrated gimbal camera, it is the first smartphone to feature ARRI color science in its image processing pipeline.
So, let’s start there. The main camera supports 10-bit ARRI LogC3 recording in a dedicated ARRI Cinema mode, combined with ARRI Wide Gamut 3 and built-in, real-time-previewable ARRI Looks. Honor says footage can go straight into the likes of DaVinci Resolve with ARRI LUTs applied as part of a "complete mobile capture-to-post-production workflow."
Harald Brendel, ARRI's Director of Image Science, has said that the two companies have calibrated the phone so that it can use the same LUTs as an ALEXA and thus produce “very similar” images. There is a lot more to an imaging pipeline than just that though, and as yet we don’t know the details of bitrate or measured dynamic range (Honor claims 14 stops).
Perhaps more importantly, Honor has confirmed the ARRI technology will extend into the upcoming Honor Magic9 Series, which is a far more straightforward, conventional smartphone and is liable to be the one that really introduces ARRI color science into the mass smartphone space.
The gimbal’s engineering goes way beyond gimmick. Dubbed the Titanium Agile Gimbal, it’s a 4-DoF mechanical system that Honor says takes over 60 manufacturing processes to build, features over 100 precision components, and is the result of 100-plus patents. The company claims it is 65% smaller and 200% stronger than mainstream gimbals, with a 2.6 g titanium motor capable of 360 degrees per second and a "Super Steel Flip Motor" rated at 120 N·m/L torque density.
Different operational modes include Tilt Lock, First Person View (FPV), FPV Vertical and AI SpinShot. Running on MagicOS, "YOYO Robot Mode" combines multimodal perception, gesture recognition and voice source localization for automatic subject tracking during vlogging, livestreaming or video calls, plus hands-free gesture deployment of the arm and a "YOYO Auto Execution" AI agent layer with a third-party developer interface.
Remembering it’s a flagship Android phone too, the rest of the spec sheet is impressive. It features a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, a custom cooling system, a 7060 mAh silicon-carbon battery, 120 W wired and 50 W wireless charging, and has a 6.31-inch LTPO OLED display (with 1 to 120 Hz adaptive refresh, 6800 nits peak brightness, 4320 Hz PWM dimming) protected under Honor's NanoCrystal Shield, and a metal unibody.
There is also no planned international release and, even if there is, it will be a limited rollout. Even though Honor products aren't formally banned in the US, the company has chosen not to sell there while its status under potential Commerce Department export restrictions remains unresolved.
Chinese pricing by way of a yardstick for future reference though is RMB 9999 (about $1485) for 12 GB RAM / 512 GB storage, and RMB 12,999 (about $1930) for 16 GB RAM / 1 TB storage.
