The Curious Case of the Drone That Wouldn't Fly

Written by Andy Stout | Aug 8, 2025 10:35:49 AM

Well, not so much wouldn't as couldn't, as Tilta's new Handheld Support System for the DJI Mavic 4 Pro is all about turning the DJI drone into a fully functional handheld camera rig.

Frankly, we're not sure whether this is sublime or ridiculous, and are quite prepared to believe it exists in some sort of quantum state between the two, but Tilta's new Handheld Support System for the DJI Mavic 4 Pro dramatically clips the wings of a Mavic 4 Pro drone and turns it into handheld camera system.

Built with a modular design, Tilta says the system supports a variety of configurations to match different shooting needs apart from the obvious aerial one, whether you’re shooting handheld or interestingly mounting it on a vehicle for dynamic 360° roller shots.

There are plenty of mounting options to support all this too, including a Cold Shoe Receiver, 15mm Rod, Rosette and 1/4″-20 Threads with Locating Points. All of these expand the potential for attaching various accessories such as on-board lights and more. The base of the remote controller mount also features a specialized clearance slot, allowing seamless integration of DJI audio accessories for high-quality, synced sound.

It's light at 15.75 × 10.63 x 1.97 in / 400 x 270 x 50 mm and weighs just 1.43 lbs / 648 grams.

If we were giving out awards for left-field thinking at IBC, Tilta would probably win the category hands down for this alone. But it does make some sense. DJI's drone-originated tech is successful enough that it has been ported from drones to all manner of other purposes, and the Osmo Pocket 3 accounts for one out of every three video cameras currently sold in Japan. The Mavic 4 Pro's light weight, stabilisation, recording workflow, Hasselblad lens, and that 360° roller capability certainly means it brings plenty to the table, even if its most obvious drone benefit - y'know, flight - is temporarily suspended.
