4K is happening faster than anyone - even we - predicted. Here's news of a 4K TV set that's barely more expensive than a "mere" HD one

David Shapton has just reported in RedShark that Sony are releasing 4k displays with both 4K and OLED technologies combined to give a really high-end visual experience (you can read about it here), well now I can report on what is now taking place at the other extreme.

The first wave of cheap consumer level 4k UHD displays is here. Tiger Direct in the USA are selling a Seiki branded 50“ UHDTV for only $1299! Now maybe 50“ is a little on the small side to take full advantage of the 4K UHD images but I’m sure these are still going to sell like hotcakes and it’s worth keeping in mind that we are only at the start of this wave of 4K technology.

Here’s a link to the TV on the tiger direct web page.

4K over HDMI

The 4k input is over a HDMI cable (version 1.4 of HDMI supports UHD 4K). The specifications seem to suggest the display supports 10bit colour which has some people very excited. It has a very slimline profile and is light enough for one person to carry it.

I don’t think anyone was expecting 4K to be reaching these kind of prices this quickly. Now it just remains to be seen if the consumer will be prepared to pay just a little extra to get a 4K TV.
