Apertus Axiom making progress in giant leaps

ApertusAxiom: First 4K DNG

The Open Source camera project from Apertus is making real progress

There are a lot of camera "concept"s around. More often than not, they remain just that - fascinating, exiting, figments of the imagination. That's why it's so good to see that there's real progress being made with the Apertus Axiom Alpha prototype camera.

It's also good to see that the team is being so open.

They've just announced that they've captured their first 4K shot in the form of a DNG file - essentially a format for "digital negatives. This is an important step because it not only shows that incredible progress is being made, but also that the project is going to have some high-end capabilities when it's done.

Calibration still needed

The picture you see above is not perfect - it still has several imperfections including Fixed Pattern noise, which is relatively easy to calibrate out of the system. Because the pattern is fixed, all you have to do is work out which pixels are giving anomalous readings, and apply the opposite value to cancel it out.

Thanks, Sebastian, for keeping us informed. This is getting very exciting indeed. Read Sebastian's blog here.
