Sony's XYN platform finally has a commercial release date: the cloud-based suite for generating 3DCG assets for virtual production arrives in the US in summer 2026.
Sony has announced that XYN (pronounced “Zin”), a suite of three software tools that can generate production-quality 3DCG assets from real-world spaces, is expected to be available to professional customers in the US from summer 2026.
The software was initially announced as far back as January 2025, but has firmly remained under the radar since then. Its focus initially is on capturing, generating, and utilizing 3DCG assets for virtual production in film, drama, and commercial production. Planned expansion into gaming, animation, architecture, manufacturing, digital twins, and cultural heritage archiving will follow.
XYN Spatial Scan Navi is a smartphone app that pairs with a Sony Alpha camera to guide users through the capture process using AR overlays. It visualizes required shooting positions and angles in real time, highlights completed sections in a bird's-eye view to prevent missed shots, and automatically records shooting data, lens information, and camera metadata to feed into the 3DCG generation pipeline.
XYN Spatial Scan is the cloud-based generation engine. Sony's proprietary algorithms process footage from standard mirrorless cameras to produce 3DCG assets optimized for large LED volumes, handling reflections, gloss, and atmospheric detail at high resolution. Sony states that because rendering is handled in the cloud, no dedicated on-premises production environment is required. Output is compatible with Unreal Engine and other standard 3DCG tools. HDR-optimized generation is currently in beta.
Lastly, XYN Spatial Renderer Plugin is a real-time rendering plug-in for Unreal Engine that maintains image quality on LED backgrounds regardless of distance or angle. It supports HDR display and enables per-area color correction, depth-of-field adjustment, and CG overlay during virtual production. It also integrates with media servers and software including Disguise (which will be showcasing a plugin for the ecosystem, more on that soon), and with Sony's Virtual Production Tool Set for pre-shoot simulation and color calibration.
Virtual production is becoming a steadily more competitive market, but Sony’s unique position in the space is that it owns the entire production chain from cameras to LED displays. Being able to further lean into integration with Alpha series cameras is an interesting development which could translate into genuine production benefits. The system was demoed at NAB 2025 and SIGGRAPH 2025, so it is good to see it being prepped for real world use in the coming months.
No word on pricing nor availability outside the US as yet. More info at the XYN website.
