Sony bills the new FE 50-150mm F2 GM, as the world’s first telephoto zoom lens with a maximum focal length of 150 mm and F2 aperture.
The new Sony FE 50-150mm F2 GM is an interesting looking piece of glass. It combines a standard focal length of 50mm at the wide-angle end with an open aperture of F2 and high resolution comparable to that of a prime lens.
The company says that the FE 50-150mm F2 GM's internal optical design plays a crucial role in producing its image quality, integrating two XA (extreme aspherical) elements, two Super ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements, and three ED elements to suppress aberrations. Additionally, the floating focusing system enables a minimum focusing distance of 0.4m at the wide end and a maximum magnification of 0.20 for detailed shooting.
A newly developed 11-blade circular aperture further enhances the signature G Master bokeh you would expect from it.
Four XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors and Sony’s advanced control algorithms deliver fast, accurate, and quiet autofocus which is more than handy for video. This high-performance AF system is compatible with Sony's Alpha 9 III too, supporting continuous shooting at up to 120 frames per second with full AF/AE tracking.
Designed with filmmakers in mind, it minimises focus breathing and is compatible with Sony's Breathing Compensation feature on select Alpha cameras. Linear Response MF ensures intuitive manual focus control, while the lens’s internal zoom design maintains stability even while zooming mounted on gimbals.
Weight is 340 g (47.3 oz) without tripod base, and it has a length of 200 mm (7-7/8 in). Lastly, it features a robust dust- and moisture-resistant design, while a fluorine coating on the front element repels contaminants.
The FE 50-150mm F2 GM will be available at the beginning of June 2025 for $3898 / £3800 / €4400.
