Sony FE 400mm F4.5 GM & FE 600mm F6.3 GM: specs, price

Sony has announced the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS and FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS, super-telephoto primes it calls the lightest in their class at under 1 kg each. Both ship October 2026.

We continue the slightly odd trend of post IBC breaking news with the Sony, who has introduced two G Master super-telephoto prime lenses for the Alpha full-frame E-mount system: the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS and the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS, and bills them confidently as the world's lightest lenses in their respective categories.

The FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS weighs approximately 994 g (2.2 lb) and the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS approximately 995 g (2.2 lb), making them suited to active, handheld shooting styles. Weight distribution has been designed to position the center of gravity closer to the camera body, near the tripod mount, rather than toward the front of the lens.

Both lenses carry the resolution and bokeh characteristics of the G Master series across the super-telephoto range, capturing distant subjects in fine detail.

The FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS measures approximately 108mm in maximum diameter and 242mm in length; the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS measures approximately 108mm in maximum diameter and 263mm in length. Those dimensions aid portability and handling during handheld shooting.

Four customizable focus hold buttons sit around the lens barrel. A function ring, focus range limiter, Full-time DMF switch, focus mode switch, and image stabilization mode switch support operation across shooting styles.

With Sony's optional teleconverters, the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS reaches focal lengths up to 800mm and the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS up to 1200mm.

Optical design

The optical design incorporates three Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and one ED glass element, suppressing chromatic aberration and other aberrations that commonly occur at super-telephoto focal lengths and delivering high resolution from the center of the image to the edges. Sony's Nano AR Coating II reduces ghosting and flare in backlit conditions.

An 11-blade circular aperture and optimization of spherical aberration during both design and manufacturing achieve the smooth bokeh characteristics of G Master.

Motors and stabilization

Two XD Linear Motors and a control algorithm optimized specifically for these lenses deliver AF for tracking fast-moving subjects such as birds, wildlife, and sports. Both lenses are fully compatible with α9 III continuous shooting at up to 120 fps with AF/AE tracking.

Built-in optical image stabilization reduces camera shake during handheld shooting at super-telephoto focal lengths. The lenses also support the camera body's Active Mode image stabilization and coordinated image stabilization control, for stills and movies with reduced blur when shooting handheld. And they support the camera body's breathing compensation function, which corrects changes in angle of view caused by shifts in focus position during movie recording.

A dust and moisture resistant design and a fluorine coating on the front element that resists contaminants support use in a range of outdoor environments, which is exactly where these are aimed.

Pricing and availability

Both lenses will be available from October 2026. The FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS will retail for $2699, and the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS for $3699.
