SmallHD Rolls Out Canon Camera Control

Written by RedShark News Staff | Nov 13, 2025 3:00:00 PM

SmallHD has introduced integrated camera control for a range of Canon cameras, though it has to be said it comes at a fairly steep cost.

SmallHD has just announced a paid upgrade that introduces Canon camera control to a decent proportion of its line-up. This is going to allow you to adjust Shutter Speed, Aperture, ISO, ND, Codec, and trigger record Start/Stop, navigate through the camera deep menu UI on screen, and provide Touch to Focus compatibility.

Compatibility

Cameras

  • Canon C70
  • C80
  • C400
  • C300 Mark III
  • C500 Mark II

Monitors

  • All Ultra monitors (5-inch and 7-inch)
  • All Cine monitors (5-inch and 7-inch)
  • All 4K production monitors — Cine, OLED, and Quantum models

Functionality

There are slight variations across different monitors, but basically it's the same deal. If you're using an EF or RF lens with autofocus and full communication, additional controls will appear. You can adjust iris directly in the camera-control panel; if a function isn’t available, it will be greyed out.

Dials are customisable. Press and hold a dial to assign functions such as shutter, white balance, ISO, FPS, ND, or iris. Both WiFi and wired connections are supported.

If you're using a Cine 7 or any touchscreen-only monitor, Canon’s deep menu only supports joystick input. To compensate, SmallHD has provided on-screen up/left/right/down controls so touchscreen-only monitors can still allow full navigation.

And an important qualifier: Canon’s control protocol does not allow playback.

Pricing and Availability

Available as of now as a digital software license download, as we've already hinted at this is not a cheap add-on. SmallHD is charging $400 for this new functionality, and there may also be additional costs when it comes to connections and adapters. More details on that here
