Sigma has announced the development of the Sigma 28-105mm T3 FF, joining its previously announced inaugural autofocus Sigma 28-45mm T2 FF to form the first lenses in the new AF Cine line.
A busy week for Sigma. Not content with announcing the new Aizu Primes, it has announced the development of the new Sigma 28-105mm T3 FF. This joins the previously announced inaugural autofocus Sigma 28-45mm T2 FF, which was a big enough deal when it broke cover last year as the company's first autofocus lens. One lens is one thing, two is the start of a whole new line which the company is naming AF Cine.
The Sigma AF Cine line plans to build on the optical system of Sigma’s Art lenses to offer what looks on paper to be a winning combination of rendering performance, high-precision autofocus with excellent tracking capability, and the sort of ergonomics required for professional cinema production.
The optical systems of the Sigma 28-45mm T2 FF and Sigma 28-105mm T3 FF incorporate the designs of two of the company’s highly acclaimed still lenses: the Sigma 28-45mm F1.8 DG DN | Art and the Sigma 28-105mm F2.8 DG DN | Art. “These lenses deliver exceptional resolution and beautiful bokeh regardless of focal length or focus position, along with a sharp, clean look with minimal flare and ghosting,” says the company.
Video adaptations have been added on top of this. The AF Cine Line integrates cinema-style mechanics and operability, featuring a limited-rotation focus ring, industry-standard 0.8M pitch gears, and a clickless aperture ring to meet video shooting demands. Both lenses, and presumably the whole line, will be available in L-Mount and Sony E-mount. And then there’s that debut autofocus. Equipped with a linear motor HLA (High-response Linear Actuator), the Sigma AF Cine Line promises to capture the sort of rapid focus shifts you find in gimbal or handheld shooting.
We'll know more once people get their hands on them, but initial reports suggest that the AF focus performance is impressive.
Pricing is currently TBD. The Sigma 28-45mm T2 FF will be available in November 2025, while you have to wait a bit longer for the Sigma 28-105mm T3 FF which will come out sometime in Spring 2026. Given that an initial lens deigned to test the waters has already been joined by a second before release, you would expect more to be announced in the future.
