ShiftCam’s new Planck Studio SSD boasts speeds of up to 3700 MB/s, and features magnetic mounting, device tracking, and up to 8 TB of additional storage.
Gadgets and gizmos creator ShiftCam has a new superfast SSD for mobile content creators that doubles down on the concept of the Planck Creator SSD it launched last year. That was a tiny 2 TB drive that simply slotted into the USB-C slot of whatever device you wanted to use it on. The new Planck Studio adds a whole lot more to that.
For a start it's faster, offering speeds up to 3700 MB/s, thanks in part to supporting the USB4 standard, whereas the original topped out at 1050 MB/s. It's also considerably more capacious, starting at 4 TB instead of the maximum 2 TB the original model offered. It now goes up to 8 TB.
But that isn't even the really interesting stuff. Where it gets really good in our eyes is with the magnet that sticks it to the back of your phone. Yes, that means you're going to have to tether it via a cable to use it, but chances are if you need to add 4 TB of storage to your smartphone you have some sort of rig set-up going anyway.
To be honest, we might just use it for storage even if we're shooting on a normal camera as it's a lot more difficult to lose your phone than a small drive. Plus, it also integrates with Apple and Google's device-finder networks, so it's trackable. And the icing on a very considerable cake so far is the built-in screen that displays the name identifier, transfer speed, and available storage capacity.
