RED Cine-Broadcast Module NAB 2026: tally triggers, 8K live, and a fight for the broadcast market

RED's updated Cine-Broadcast Module arrives at NAB 2026 with tally-triggered R3D recording and 8K live streaming.

The new Thomas Riedel-owned ARRI's avowed intent to build on the company's increasing presence in live broadcast workflows is opening up a new competitive front in the high-end camera market. This is an area that RED very much wants for itself too, and it is at NAB with the latest version of its Cine-Broadcast Module.

The main headline of its v2.2 Beta is the addition of automatic record-triggering via external tally commands from the video switcher. This means R3D files are captured only for the portions of an event actually directed live, which should significantly cut post-production overhead and making it straightforward for editors to relink to the camera raw source.

RED Connect updates

RED Connect also gains significant updates in v2.2, with full support for RED's Broadcast Color Pipeline and Phantom Track functionality now in place. Together these open up workflows including 4K 240 fps EVS-ready slow motion and 8K live production using RED's broadcast color tools.

The Cine-Broadcast Module has seen real-world traction with CBS Sports and NBC Sports Group, while Fuse Technical Group has integrated RED cameras into its live event infrastructure for concerts.

Immersive demo

RED's after more, however. On the NAB show floor it is running an 8K live R3D streaming basketball demo built around RED Connect, with Monks providing server infrastructure and live VR workflow. The demo includes camera switching, UV mapping, composite graphics, and multichannel audio, targeting sports, shared-reality venues, and Apple Vision Pro delivery.  It's a pointed message from the company that the Blackmagic Immersive camera isn't the only game in town when it comes to producing immersive content.
