Two new families of high-performance drives announce SanDisk’s entrance into the portable SSD market, offering impressive speed at one end and pocket-sized ruggedness at the other. The number of storage options for data wrangling duties has just expanded impressively as a result.

The two new families are the SanDisk Extreme 900 Portable, billed as the world’s fastest line of Type C-based portable SSDs; and the SanDisk Extreme 500 Portable, the company’s new pocket-sized, ruggedised drives. The two units feature transfer speeds of up to nine times and four times faster than a standard portable hard drive respectively.

The Extreme 900s are available in up to 1.92TB, are built into a durable aluminium case, and feature speeds of up to 850MB/s. They ship with both USB Type-C and Type-A cables and 480GB, 960GB, and 1.92TB flavours are available for $399.99, $599.99, and $999.99 respectively.

The Extreme 500, meanwhile, is half the size of a smartphone and allows users to transfer files at up to 415MB/s. Available in up to 480GB it features rubber bumpers, and a metal ring that easily clips into a bag.120GB, 240GB, and 480GB capacities are available at $99.99, $149.99, and $239.99.

Both are made of temperature and impact-resistant materials and also feature SanDisk SecureAccess software, which provides 128-bit encryption to secure files and help ensure that data remains secure even if disks get mislaid.
