X-Men: Days of Future Past holds a very special distinction for its franchise: it is the first X-Men film nominated for the Academy Award in Best Visual Effects. Here we celebrate the film by sharing two illuminating and visually sumptuous VFX breakdowns.

Films from Marvel franchises have been regulars in the Best Visual Effects category of the Academy Awards the past five or so years, with Iron Man and Avengers films securing the nods.

I was somewhat surprised to learn that X-Men: Days of Future Past is the first film of the franchise to receive a nomination. All of the previous films were effects-heavy blockbusters, so I assumed that one of them earned a nomination at some point. But when you check out the VFX breakdowns below, you may be swayed to think that the most recent installment could be a bit better than the rest, visually speaking. Richard Stammers of MPC supervised visual effects for the film and he shares the nomination with VFX supervisors Lou Pecora of Digital Domain and Tim Crosbie of Rising Sun Pictures, as well as special effects supervisor Cameron Waldbauer of Objects, Inc.
