The new lightweight Panasonic LUMIX S 85mm f/1.8 lens expands on the growing choice for L Mount cameras.

The new lens marks the first of four planned f/1.8 lenses from Panasonic for the L Mount system. The new range will keep a common size, with commonality in the control parts as well to make moving between them seamless.

Previously the current L Mount lineup has received some criticism for the size and weight of the glass, and the new series is the company’s foray into correcting this.

The new 85mm lens consists of 9 elements in 8 groups and uses 2 Extra-low Dispersion lenses to suppress axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberration. The lens has been designed to cater for both stills and video use with minimal focus breathing, The front filter thread is 67mm while the diaphragm is of a 9-blade circular design for round bokeh.

It is fully weatherproof with dust/splash resistance and weighs in at around 355g, making it incredibly light weight.

The LUMIX S 85mm f/1.8 will be available from the end of November at a price of £599.99 (US$599.99). Additionally those who are pining for better telephoto options will be pleased to hear of a new 70-300mm lens that is under development.
