Some Nikon Z6III and Z5II mirrorless cameras and the Nikon ZR have a hardware problem

Nikon has issued a free repair advisory for owners of the Z6III, Z5II, and ZR cinema camera after discovering a manufacturing defect that could make cameras inoperable.

Nikon has issued a technical service advisory covering three cameras — the Z6III and Z5II mirrorless cameras and the ZR cinema camera — after discovering that certain units were assembled using parts that "do not meet our quality standards."

The defect is a serious one and has the potential to render affected cameras inoperable. However, the company says it has identified the serial number ranges of all affected units, which likely means that it's only a percentage of the cameras in circulation and not all of them. Which is good for Nikon. A faulty batch of cameras is not ideal but a long way from the total carnage that can be a full product recall.

Nikon will repair any affected units free of charge, regardless of warranty status. Return shipping costs will also be covered.

Repair requests open on March 23, 2026.

Owners can check whether their camera is affected by entering the serial number, the seven-digit number printed on a label visible when the monitor is opened, via the links on Nikon's service advisory page. If a camera is confirmed as affected, instructions for submitting a repair request will be provided at that point.

Unfortunately, Nikon is not currently publishing a list of affected serial numbers, so you do have to check on the website.
