Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II Announced: Best Autofocus Ever?

Nikon’s new pro zoom NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II adds internal zoom, faster autofocus, and better video performance.

Nikon has just introduced the second-generation NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II lens. Redesigned with an internal zoom, faster autofocus, and a new optical construction, it’s lighter than its predecessor at 675 g / 1.49 lb. Nikon also says it is the first professional 24-70mm full-frame lens to use an internal zoom. Perhaps more boldly, it also claims it to feature Nikon’s best autofocus ever, which sounds good but we’re just going to have to wait until the reviews come in to find out more about.

Internal Zoom Design and Build

That internal zoom keeps the centre of gravity consistent when changing focal lengths. Photographers can zoom without adjusting their grip, and video users do not need to rebalance the lens on a gimbal. Length is 142 millimeters (5.6 inches). The design also reduces the number of exposed moving parts and is supported by Nikon’s professional weather sealing.

Faster Autofocus with Silky Swift Voice Coil Motor

The lens is the first zoom in the Z series to feature Nikon’s Silky Swift Voice Coil Motor. As a result, there are some impressive performance gains over the original: autofocus is up to five times faster and 50% quieter, with focus tracking also claimed to be 60% quicker when zooming. The new optical design uses fewer elements, and coatings help counter ghosting and flare.

Nikon’s own handy table shows the differences between the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II  and the original.

Designed for Hybrid Photo and Video Use

The Mark II version has also been designed with hybrid photo/video users in mind. Focus breathing has been ‘slashed’ for more natural transitions, and it also features a de-clickable control ring: click on for tactile feedback; click off for shooting video and smooth, silent, stepless operation.

An 11-blade aperture produces circular bokeh. Close-up performance has also improved over its predecessor, with minimum focus distances of 0.24 m at 24mm and 0.33 m at 70mm, and a maximum magnification of 0.21x and 0.32x respectively.

Additional Features and Accessories

Other updates include reduced focus breathing, a de-clickable control ring, a focus-limit switch, and a new lens hood with a useful filter adjustment window that lets you adjust rotating filters without having to remove the hood — very handy if using variable ND filters for video.

Pricing and Availability

The NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II will be available mid-September for $2799 / £2599 / €2999.
