Nexus G1 preorders open with Q3 release window, NexusOS on show

Nexus Project Chief, Thomas Bolland, has a major update on the eagerly anticipated Nexus G1 camera, which is now set to ship in Q3 this year for a retail price of $3300 with preorders open as of now.

There's plenty to talk about here too...Project Update #9 has just dropped in the past few minutes, so without further ado.

Nexus has developed a fully custom operating system that provides control over all camera settings, and, according to Bolland "is highly responsive, allows hybrid touch and physical control, is built for future expansion, and feels incredible to use."

In the update clip you get to see the Nexus G1 powered up and running NexusOS on the 4โ€ control panel screen for the first time. Bolland says that the software has been developed from the ground up with purpose-built libraries, backend systems, and a lightweight rendering engine, all with the purpose of providing full control over performance, interface behavior, and hardware integration.

"Itโ€™s the first camera operating system ever to natively integrate control of fully manual cinema lenses," he adds. "The Nexus G1 powers and controls Focus, Iris, and Zoom motors directly, with each parameter treated as a core setting inside NexusOS. This is extremely exciting because it means manual lenses are now fully integrated into the system โ€” no external focus kits or third-party controllers are required. And paired with the Nexus Grip, this enables fast, precise, and effortless single-operator focus/lens control.

"This deep hardware-software integration also lays the foundation for future long-range wireless control โ€” not just of lens FIZ, but of every camera setting, fully synchronized and remotely accessible โ€“ via the integrated ZigBee transceiver module."

Hang on, did he just say 'Nexus Grip'? Indeed. Originally shown as a concept earlier in the year, it has now also been designed for manufacturability and prototyped.

"This is the first time weโ€™ve had everything together in one unit: the hardware, software, and final mechanical design. Recording functionality is not active yet โ€” thatโ€™s coming next update. The Nexus is perfectly balanced in handheld mode with the Nexus Grip and your left hand under the body."

All Nexus G1 cameras will be built in Australia. The company has secured the assembly facility and is now actively planning the production workflow, staffing, and setup of all necessary equipment and infrastructure. The Nexus facility will support large scale assembly all while being entirely off grid and driven by solar power.

"We originally planned to have a third party do contract assembly, however this would mean handing over quality control to someone else โ€“ and we decided we can't take that chance. Setting up our own assembly facility does take more time up front, but gives us full oversight and control over build quality, assembly consistency, and every detail that matters."

This of course impacts the current tariff situation. Currently,  USA customs will apply a 10% baseline tariff. "However, we are currently keeping our retail price unchanged because it's looking like these tariffs may be lifted soon. If they are lifted before we ship, there will be no 10% tariff fee," says Bolland.

This is slipping again, but to be honest the schedule has always looked a bit ambitious so this is no great surprise. "We are moving release to Q3, due to delays finding engineers with the experience required to complete the high-speed signal routing work for the imaging system, and to give us time to properly setup and plan production."

And at least the tech specs are locked down. Full list over at the Nexus website.

Preorders open

Bolland says that the company decided to hold off on preorders until it had the prototype and costing properly developed and the camera proven to a stage where it was 100% confident.

"We are now at that stage โ€“ so we have decided to open for 10% deposit preorders," he says. "As a thank you to everyone who has been following the project and supports us to move to production by preordering, all preorders will receive the exclusive Nexus G1 Founders Edition, which includes custom markings, awesome Lightning Strike carbon fiber side panels, and US$320 off the standard retail price."
