The latest flagship gimbal from DJI, the DJI Osmo Mobile 8 features Apple DockKit compatibility for active tracking and seamless 360° horizontal pan rotation.
The new DJI Osmo Mobile 8 gimbal introduces a range of decent upgrades over previous models. These include 360° horizontal pan rotation, an ergonomic low-angle grip, and expanded subject-tracking options.
For the first time, iPhone users can access Apple DockKit, Apple’s intelligent subject-tracking technology, for tracking within the native Camera app or any of over 200 iOS apps that support DockKit.
Rather more cross-platform, the Multifunctional Module supports both iPhone and Android devices and can now track pets as well as humans. Magnetically attached to the gimbal, the module’s tracking works across native camera and livestreaming apps. The module also includes a fill light with eight brightness levels and eight color-temperature options, adjustable via a side wheel, a built-in microphone receiver for DJI Mic transmitters, and enables hand-gesture control for important functions.
Lastly, the DJI Mimo app for iOS and Android enables ActiveTrack 7.0.1, DJI’s own advanced tracking system. With Dual Lens Boost, the app uses both a phone’s wide-angle and telephoto lenses to maintain a decent enough lock on a subject that it should work even in crowded environments. Smart Capture can detect multiple people and allows switching between them.
The Osmo Mobile 8 is also the first model in the series with 360° horizontal rotation on the pan axis, enabling smooth panoramic shots and creative movement. The new low-angle grip design supports dynamic perspectives, particularly for tracking pets or ground-level action.
An integrated tripod and built-in extension rod expand the field of view, while the company says the 370 g (0.82 lb) gimbal offers up to 10 hours of operating time and can also charge a smartphone, making it suitable for extended outdoor shoots and livestreams.
