HOVERAir VERSA: a pocket camera that flies

HOVERAir's VERSA clips on wings to convert a pocket gimbal camera into a self-flying drone.

Following in the wake of last summer’s AQUA IP-67 rated waterproof drone that’s right at home launching off the waves, HOVERAir is looking to take drone technology in another new direction with the launch of the VERSA. Certainly the company wins awards for the uniqueness of the concept, as VERSA is a gimbal camera that can be converted into a self-flying drone.

Handheld mode 

In handheld mode, the camera works like a typical three-axis gimbal. Details are scarce beyond the fact that HOVERAir says VERSA's image processor is built for dynamic range, aiming to hold detail in both bright highlights, such as neon signage or sunsets, and deep shadows. We’re going to assume 4K output judging from the teaser footage above.

Aerial mode

So much so mainstream, but attaching the included wings, which just clip onto the body and then fold out, then turns the device into an autonomous aerial camera. The company is very much emphasizing the lack of required piloting skills, so it looks unlikely that there will even be a controller option, rather you get an AI tracking engine that follows the user through over 10 different flight modes.

Two new AI features are included. AI framing analyzes the environment and suggests camera placement, then applies a crop to lock in the composition. 3D Worlds has the drone fly a 360-degree pattern around a subject and reconstruct the scene in three dimensions, viewable from any angle on any device; HOVERAir says more detail on this feature is coming soon.

Pricing and availability

More details are also going to be required on pricing and availability too, though if the company follows the same launch model as the AQUA last year, expect an appearance on Indiegogo later this month.
