What will no doubt be one of the most-talked about cameras at this year's IBC, the long-awaited FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA 55 is now confirmed to be shipping in October for $16,499.
FUJIFILM has confirmed that the long-awaited GFX ETERNA 55 will be on show at IBC starting tomorrow and that the first units will start shipping in October with pricing starting at $16,499.
The camera has been built from the ground-up for filmmaking, featuring an internal electronic variable ND, a flexible native lens mount, targeted design elements, and wide connectivity. FUJIFILM Digital Film Science, meanwhile, offers highly controllable color
application, including 20 built-in Film Simulations, F-Log2 C’s expansive gamut and
dynamic range, and the ability to create and load 3D LUTs (Look Up Tables).
We already knew a lot about the camera following the company's latest info drop in June. Most of this is confirmed, but there's some fresh detail in today's announcement covering sensor dimensions, ISO range, full I/O, physical size & weight, operating specs, networking details, and even included kit. We now have a bit more flesh on the bones.
Have a look at the two cinematic shorts it screened at its launch event at IBC here.
The FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA 55 is equipped with a 102-megapixel GFX 102MP CMOS II HS large format sensor (44 × 33mm / 1.73 × 1.30 in). That supports five main recording formats: GF, Premista, 35mm, Anamorphic (35mm), and Super35, each with multiple resolution options. (see full specs below).
It enables 4:3 open gate recording at up to 48 fps, leveraging a 43.8 × 32.9mm (1.72 × 1.30 in), 54.8mm (2.16 in) diagonal image circle, which, as the company is happy to point out often, is among the tallest sensors available on the market.
It also adopts a four-point Optical Low-Pass Filter to reduce potential optical anomalies, and incorporates Dual-Base ISO (800 & 3200) for flexible shooting in extreme lighting conditions.
The camera supports F-Log2 and F-Log2 C with 14+ stops of dynamic range, which should give plenty of wiggle room in post. It also includes 20 Fujifilm Film Simulations for varied visual styles, alongside 10 Film Simulation conversion 3D-LUTs for precise color and tone control.
Along with the “ETERNA” and “ETERNA BLEACH BYPASS” LUTs announced at launch, users can download a total of 10 3D Film Simulation LUTs, including PROVIA/Standard, Velvia, and ACROS. Up to 16 3D-LUTs can be stored in-camera, allowing filmmakers to preview looks while shooting.
GFX ETERNA 55 supports three Apple ProRes codecs - Apple ProRes 422 HQ, Apple ProRes 422 and Apple ProRes 422 LT. When filming in Apple ProRes, the camera can use proxy video recording such as Apple ProRes 422 Proxy. It also supports recording of H.265/HEVC as a lightweight codec option.
It can output 4:2:2 10-bit uncompressed data and up to 8K/30P 12-bit video in RAW data via HDMI. As you would expect from a modern cinema camera, it supports Frame.io Camera to Cloud functionality.
It weighs approximately 2.0 kg (4.4 lb), making it a decent option for small crews and solo shooting.
In terms of operation, it features dual 3-inch side monitors, giving both operators and assistants menu access in most configurations. A bright 2000-nit 5-inch touch LCD will allow for outdoor visibility even in bright sunlightThe front of the camera and the included handle feature a multi-function dial that controls focus, iris, and zoom on GF lenses. Switch to ND mode and it adjusts the internal variable electronic ND filter.
It houses an NP-W235 internal battery for up to 30 minutes of filming without external power, supporting hot swap external battery changes without reboot. It also features CFexpress Type B and SD cards, helping the flexible recording of various video formats and bitrates.
“GFX ETERNA 55 introduces the filmmaking community to the tallest digital cinema sensor that has ever been available for purchase on the open market," says John Blackwood, Director, Product Marketing, Electronic Imaging Division & Optical Devices Division, FUJIFILM North America Corporation. "The native 4:3 Open Gate format echoes back to the filmmaking legacy of 4-perf Super 35mm, but at a scale about 3x larger. This sensor height brings a great range of format flexibility and opportunities to create larger than Full Frame images with spherical lenses, or images of epic cinematic scale when paired with anamorphic lenses.”
The initial shipments of FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA 55 are expected to begin in October 2025 at $16,499. Select dealers will be accepting pre-orders beginning September 15, 2025.
