Frame.io Drive brings cloud-mounted storage to the creative desktop

Written by Andy Stout | Apr 25, 2026 11:07:50 AM

Frame.io Drive lets you mount cloud projects directly to your desktop and work with assets in real-time with no downloads and no syncing, as this NAB 2026 demo walkthrough shows.

Frame.io gets steadily more capable every time we look at it, but even for its active dev team the update at this year's NAB was an impressive one. Senior Product Marketing Manager, JJ Powell, is your guide to everything that's new from the NAB show floor

An expanded role

New at NAB 2026 were Frame.io Drive and Frame.io Mounted Storage, which help take Frame.io further from its initial role as a video review and approval tool to what Powell describes as a creative management platform.

Frame.io Drive is a free desktop application that replaces the earlier Frame.io Transfer app. It retains fast, uninterruptible upload and download functionality while adding the ability to mount Frame.io cloud projects directly in macOS Finder or Windows File Explorer. Rather than downloading or syncing files, users stream assets directly from the cloud, enabling real-time scrubbing and playback of 4K media as if from a local drive or server.

Not just video, not just Adobe

The demo showed a Premiere Pro project opened directly from a mounted Frame.io project, with saves writing back to the cloud automatically. Powell also demonstrated round-trips with Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, as well as third-party tools including Capture One and DaVinci Resolve, illustrating that the workflow is not limited to video production or, indeed, just Adobe tools.

A right-click contextual menu within Finder allows users to create Frame.io share links without switching applications, while Frame.io's existing security and governance settings apply to all mounted assets.

Frame.io Mounted Storage launched on April 15, beginning at the Frame.io Enterprise tier. A rollout to all Frame.io plans is ongoing, with each tier receiving a baseline allocation of mounted storage. Additional storage will be available to be purchased as needed.
