Cooke S4 FF/i: full-frame primes, specs and price

Cooke's S4 FF/i full-frame primes cover 18 to 100mm at T2.0. Close focus averages 385 mm (just over 15 in) and the set is available to order now.

Cooke has expanded its PL/LPL lens range with the S4 FF/i spherical primes, a full-frame evolution of its S4/i Super 35 lenses.

The set comprises six T2.0 primes: 18, 25, 35, 50, 75, and 100mm. It is a new lens design that retains some optical qualities of the original S4/i S35 but updated for full-frame cameras. Cooke says the range has a “class-leading close focus and a carefully regulated character that complements skin tones, delivers gentle clarity and expressive lens flares.”  Each focal length flares a little differently.

Bokeh is described as smooth and extremely circular wide open with gently defined edges. Toward the edges of the frame, it takes on a cat’s eye shape, and that change is consistent across the focal length range. A nine-blade iris with curved blades, in place of the S4/i S35’s eight straight blades, keeps bokeh rounder as you stop down.

Close focus averages what looks to be a class-leading 385 mm (just over 15 in). The lenses have also been designed very much with handling in mind. They average 1642 g (3.6 lb), 29% lighter than the original S4/i S35, and individual lenses weigh between 1.45 kg and 1.8 kg (3.2 lb and 4 lb) including the PL mount. Front diameter is 87 mm (3.4 in) across the range and, naturally, the lenses all feature Cooke’s latest /i Technology for real-time readout of focus and iris position, as well as motion inertial data.

Pricing and availability

The S4 FF/i lenses are priced at £11,000 / €13,000 / $15,000 per lens and are available to order now.
