Cooke Optics has announced the AP3, a three-lens anamorphic series designed for mirrorless cameras. The lenses are available in 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm focal lengths, all with a T2.4–T16 aperture range and a 1.5x squeeze factor.
Cooke has been making anamorphic lenses since 2013, when it introduced the Anamorphic/i S35 series, followed by the full-frame Anamorphic/i FF range in 2018. The AP3 extends that legacy into the mirrorless segment and follows the same philosophy as Cooke's SP3 spherical series, which launched in 2023. That makes them compact, lightweight lenses aimed at owner-operators and cinematographers who want cinematic optical quality without the bulk or cost of traditional cinema glass.
Flare is described as organic rather than manufactured, with Cooke saying the lenses respond naturally to light rather than producing preset effects. Defocus rendering is billed as smooth, with bokeh that Cooke attributes to the ground-up anamorphic design rather than software processing.
Weight runs from 1177 g to 1410 g (2.59 lb to 3.11 lb) across the set, keeping them usable on gimbals, drones, and stabilizers. Minimum focus distances are 0.5 m (19.7 in) for the 35mm, 0.6 m (23.6 in) for the 50mm, and 0.9 m (35.4 in) for the 85mm.
The lenses ship natively in Sony E-mount, with user-interchangeable mounts for RF, M, and L. A second mount can be ordered free of charge within six months of purchase.
The AP3 is available to pre-order as individual lenses or as a complete three-lens set. Prices are $7750 per lens or $22,250 for the set.
