ARRI Film Lab 1.5 adds 8mm, 16mm, and 65mm looks, anamorphic grain, and ACES 2.0 support.
ARRI has released Film Lab 1.5, an update to its license-based OpenFX plugin for multiple color grading environments, including DaVinci Resolve, bringing the look and feel of even more analog film formats to digital images.
ARRI promised ACES 2.0 support when the original Film Lab was released in November 2025, and this version delivers on that. However, the in-camera Film Lab previews on the ALEXA 35 and ALEXA 35 Xtreme that were promised after a firmware update are yet to appear, with the company currently recommending Pomfort Livegrade or DaVinci Resolve Live for on-set previews.
Nevertheless, this is a major upgrade that’s almost worthy of being a straight 2.0 release. Film Lab’s looks were previously based on 35mm film, and that has now been hugely expanded. Users can now choose 8mm, 16mm, 35mm, or 65mm as a starting point. There are also two wholly new parameters that can be played with: Grain Size and Rendition of Detail adjust the scale of the grain and the perceived sharpness respectively. Both range from 0.75 to 1.5.
An equally new Anamorphic Ratio control offers eight squeeze ratios from 1.25x to 2.0x, adjusting the horizontal stretching of film grain and halation glow. A Halation Spread control adds adjustment of the radius and character of the glow around highlights and high-contrast edges. The maximum values of Grain Intensity and Halation Intensity have doubled, and both now run from 0.0 to 2.0. The Negative Stocks, Print Processes, and Gate Weave controls remain.
New ACES 2.0 ACEScc and ACEScct input and output options support color-managed workflows in applications such as DaVinci Resolve and Baselight. In Baselight, OpenFX 1.5 color management integration lets Film Lab follow the timeline color space automatically and receive the correct input transform, so the color space no longer needs to be selected manually in the plugin.
