It's Sensurround all over again, only this time in your hand as Apple releases a new trailer for its upcoming F1 movie with an accompanying haptic vibration buzz track.
Even by the profligate standards of its television and movie arm, Apple has dropped a lot of money on its forthcoming F1 movie. As a Formula One fan of <mumble mumble> decades standing, I have to admit to having a slightly jaundiced view of the plot. But even my (currently sad) tifosi soul has been impressed by some of the footage that has been shot from inside the cars themselves. Yes, the actual F1 drivers query the realism of some of it, but by golly it's a bit of an adrenaline rush, as you would expect from a film directed by Top Gun: Maverick director, Joseph Kosinski.
Apple's latest wheeze to market it to the three dozen or so people who haven't heard about it yet is a good one too: a haptic-enabled 'buzztrack' on the trailer when watched on the Apple TV app on iOS 18.4 or higher. It works surprisingly well, the high pitch of the haptic buzz recreating the angry wasp noise of the Formula One engine and more.
Given that haptic technology has become such a part of our world nowadays, it's surprising it's not used in more places and in more creative ways. But for this instance, Apple says watchers will “experience the power of the engines, the rumble of the curbs, and the intensity of every gear shift like never before with responsive vibrations.”
Good job F1 doesn't run V10 engines any more; the phone would likely have your arm off.
