AJA FS8: Abe Apt interview on IBC 2026 launch

AJA's Abe Apt talks to RedShark about the FS8 media processor's SDI/IP bridging, audio matrix and readiness for the emerging IPMX standard.

AJA used IBC 2026 to debut a major leap forward in media processing. The FS8 is designed to solve the increasingly complex challenges of premium production, hybrid broadcast and AV environments.

AJA's Abe Apt was excited to chat with RedShark at the show.

"I've been visiting IBC for 15 years and this year we have a huge product announcement. Honestly, when I'm on camera, I do get incredibly energized!"

Apt was holding back with this more sedate sit-down chat. He described the FS8 as the most powerful evolution yet of the company's long-running FS frame-sync family.

"It's a next-generation SDI/SMPTE ST 2110 media processor built directly from the demands of top-tier broadcasters, stadiums, and large-scale corporate AV customers."

Apt traced the lineage back to the original FS1 in 2007, followed by the dual-channel FS2, the 4K-capable FS4, and the FS-HDR, which introduced Colorfront Engine processing.

"Now we have the FS8," he said. "And the FS is not just for frame sync anymore."

The FS8 delivers up to eight channels of HD/2K processing or four channels of 4K/UltraHD, effectively combining the capabilities of multiple FS-HDR units into a single 1 RU chassis. But Apt stressed that video processing is only the beginning.

Hybrid SDI/IP at full bandwidth

The FS8 includes 50 Gbps of IP throughput and full SMPTE ST 2110 support, enabling seamless conversion between SDI (copper or fiber) and IP video.

"You can convert between 2110 video and SDI baseband video seamlessly," Apt said.

This makes the FS8 a bridge device for facilities migrating from SDI to IP, especially stadiums, major broadcasters and corporate headquarters installing new IT-centric infrastructures.

Audio matrix

Apt became most animated in describing the FS8's audio capabilities, which he called "a reason to buy the box on their own."

The FS8 supports Dante, MADI, SDI-embedded audio and SMPTE 2110-30 (including AES67).

"All of these can be cross-converted, with any input mapped to any output. It's massively flexible."

The FS8 also includes master audio delay on input and up to one full second of delay on output, designed for AR/VR, virtual sets and other latency-sensitive workflows. Every channel includes a sample-rate converter, with bypass options for non-PCM formats such as 5.1 and 7.1.

Colorfront Engine

AJA's reputation for color science is reflected in the FS8, which Apt said contained "eight color boxes in HD mode or four in UltraHD." The device supports SDR-to-HDR conversion, HDR-to-SDR, and cross-conversion between HDR formats including PQ, HLG and Dolby Vision.

The FS8 also offers ultra-low-latency processing, with less than half a frame of delay, "not perceptible to the human eye," Apt said, "and a high-latency mode for workflows requiring video/audio alignment."

Preparing for the next wave of Pro AV

While the FS8 is primarily aimed at broadcast and live production environments built around SMPTE ST 2110, Apt said AJA has also engineered the system with an eye toward IPMX, the emerging open standard for Pro AV over IP. IPMX is built on the same foundation as ST 2110 but introduces flexibility that AV deployments increasingly require, including support for computer-resolution rasters, optional PTP timing, and simplified device discovery.

"In the broadcast world, we're not running into IPMX a whole bunch," Apt said. "But in corporate AV, their needs for IPMX are starting to be defined."

Unlike ST 2110, which mandates PTP timing and broadcast-spec rasters, IPMX allows devices to operate in free-run mode, supports non-broadcast resolutions, and is designed to be easier to deploy in IT-centric environments. That flexibility is exactly why major financial institutions, enterprise campuses and new-build facilities are exploring IPMX as they move away from SDI and toward all-IP infrastructures.

While the FS8 does not ship with full IPMX support, the architecture is already designed to accommodate it.

"The capability is in there," he said. "We're talking to customers to figure out what features they need."

One of the clearest examples of this forward planning is the inclusion of four 4K Region-of-Interest (ROI) scalers inside the FS8. ROI conversion is a cornerstone requirement for IPMX workflows because AV systems frequently use computer-resolution signals (2560×1440, 3840×1600, ultrawide formats) that must be cropped, scaled or reformatted before entering a broadcast switcher or a 2110 pipeline.

"The biggest product request we've had over the past five years is: make a 4K ROI," Apt said. "There are four 4K ROIs in the FS8. It allows hybrid networks to work seamlessly."

Apt acknowledged global supply-chain challenges but said AJA had prepared extensively.

"We learnt a lot in 2020-2022," he said. "We purchased a massive amount of inventory. We're confident these will be readily available."

Orders began a week before IBC, and demand has been "extreme," with major networks, sports organizations and large financial institutions already committing to deployments.

The FS8 retails for $14,995, with a Colorfront Engine license priced at $1995 and a BBC HLG LUT license at $295.
