Adobe's free Premiere mobile app is getting licensed Universal and Warner music. Clips run to 60 seconds for personal, non-commercial use only.
Adobe has announced it is working with two of the world's biggest music companies, Universal Music Group (UMG) and Warner Music Group (WMG), to bring fully licensed music clips from leading artists into its free video editing app, Adobe Premiere mobile.
Adobe says users will be able to browse, search, and preview trending music by artist or track, filter by genre and duration, bookmark favorites, and explore music through label-featured collections. The features are coming soon, though no timing has been given.
Up to 60 seconds of a track can be added to a video. Customizable templates paired with music will also be available, and finished videos can be exported and posted to licensed social platforms.
Here's the big caveat: tracks from UMG and WMG are licensed for personal, non-commercial use. Adobe Stock Audio remains available for projects that require commercially licensed music. Plus, we as yet have no idea of the size and depth of these libraries, or indeed whether any artists have carve-outs that preclude their music from featuring in such deals. The catalogs, though, suggest Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Muse, Nirvana, and many, many more.
Sony, the third of the big three, isn't mentioned in the announcement. CapCut and Instagram Edits already draw on major-label catalogs through their parent companies' licensing deals, so this is Adobe catching up. But it puts Adobe alongside two widely used editing apps and, as a gateway to the wider Adobe ecosystem, it makes sound commercial sense.
